3D Skull Reveal using Resolve Fusion and Syntheyes

  • Brian Morse

Today we are going to take a look at one way to do an erosion reveal of a 3D skull, primarily in DaVinci Resolve Fusion. This will actually be a pretty simple erosion effect, that reveals a 3D skull that matches the movements of our actor. There is a lot of creative ways to use these techniques and you can have a lot of fun with this.

First we will use a free AI tools online to create a 3d face mesh from a still frame of our actor. Then we will go into Syntheyes to do an object track of the head using our mesh. Once we have a decent result we will export out our camera and object track to Resolve Fusion. Inside Fusion we will line up a 3D skull model to match our object track and then, using the face mesh, we will setup a projected matte to cut through the skin to reveal the 3D skull, so it will perfectly match with the actors movement. Lastly we will use some noise patterns to create a basic erosion effect to tie it all together.
